Eric "Akritis" Hill

Eric D. Hill, known to the Greek community as Iraklis Vounidis (a proudly Pontian Greek name), has been teaching Hellenic martial art since 1996. He has represented the system as an instructor, competitor, author and referee. Thaskalos Hill is familiar with written and spoken modern Greek. He is also acquainted with many of the oral and written traditions of the Hellenic people.

Included are some of his  background and accomplishments/efforts as related to his journey in pursuit of authentic Greek martial art:

· 1976 - At the age of 4 his mother begins exposing him to Greek mythology and history.  His father, an engineer and
sports enthusiast, stresses study of the sciences and athletics throughout his youth.
· 1987 - Achieves the rank of black belt in Shaolin Kempo after two years of daily study and practice.  He comes to the conclusion that it is
              ineffectual  for combat.

          - He immerses himself in the study of traditional Hellenic warriorship as a teen; studying the  history and writings
of the Greek philosopher warriors (Socrates, Plato, Xenephon, etc)

· 1992 - Commenced training in Jim Arvanitis' Spartan combat system in 1992 after petitioning for 4 years
· 1993 - Initiates study of Modern Greek and the ancient Attiki dialect.  He also becomes aware of the different dialects of the Greek
language during the many phases of Hellenic history; including Koine (New Testament Greek).

· 1994 - B.S. Computer Engineering from the University of New Hampshire 1994
· 1996 - Certified by Jim Arvanitis in his Spartan combat system as an instructor after four years of intense study.

           - Authored the first Hellenic martial art (and one of the first martial art) website on the Internet
           - First becomes aware of the Greek karate men promoting the Hellenic Federation of Pankration Athlima.  He outwardly opposes
this movement as the adopted uniform is Asian in design and the rules of the competition resemble weak karate with poor judo.
           - Opens the Spartan Academy in Massachussetts.
· 1997 - Is exposed to private correspondence and personal research that confirms the existence of the 5 Hellenic clans that have lineages back
to the Greek Pankration Associations that were formed by master Pankratiasts at approximately 522 B.C.
· 2000 - Commenced study and practice of traditional Greek dance and music after moving to Orlando, FL.
           - Made arrangements with a well known promoter and a wealthy Greek restauranteur to compete in a MMA event in mainland Greece.
The Greek businessman's wife is abruptly killed in a sudden car accident several months before the event, and it is canceled.
· 2001 - Baptized  in the traditional Greek Orthodox Church.
· 2002 - Marries his wife Effie and is immersed in Pontian Greek culture by Mama, Baba, the family and extended family
           - Via further study from Hellenic sources, is presented with the realization that some of the traditional pirinhios (Gr. war dances)
mentioned in mythology and by the philosopher warriors such as Plato and Xenephon were preserved by the Greek
people from regions such as Kriti, Pelepponesos, Pontos, etc.
           - Served as Historical consultant for "2002 US National Wrestling Championships" by Oxygen Network due his knowledge of ancient
             Greek combat sports
· 2003 - Leveraging his extensive experience in the emerging sport of MMA and sparring skilled full contact martial artists (Thai boxers,
judoka, kyokoshinkai, wrestlers, boxers and fellow Pankratiasts) in the US and abroad, he devises a new set of  of
Sport Pankration rules to oppose the efforts of the oriental martial artists in Greece proper. He achieves sanctioning from ISKA
officials. He then drafts a complete business plan for investors involved with the US Open World Martial Arts Championship to be
held in July of 2004.  They accept the viability of the plan and decide to move ahead with admitting the new sport Pankration format.
Three months before the event, Disney, the venue host,  announces their opposition to the competition format.
The Sport Pankration portion of the event is canceled.

· 2004 - Authored, in Greek, "Mu Tau: Modern Greek Martial Art" for Kumite Magazine, Athens, Greece.
           - Realizes that the study of TRUE Hellenic martial art is  a mentorship endeavor in imparting the balance of mind, body and spirit to
students.  He concludes that it can only be taught to small groups.  He ceases to teach the general public and decides to concentrate
his efforts on training the current and next generation of Hellenes/Philhellenes exclusively
· 2005 - Realizes that the use of the word "Spartan" in modern martial art has become disused.  On one extreme are martial artists who
simply run gladitorial curriculum at their schools (ie. physically challenging and effective without imparting Hellenic warrior values) .
On the other extreme are Greek karate/kungfu men
of possible Pelopponesian decent who have NO concept of the physcial
effectiveness of Hellenic combative methods and philosopy. He changes the name of his palaistra to
Akrites Academy and continues
his ambitions to impart  traditional Hellenic warriorship to  his students.

· 2011 - Concludes it is his duty to act as a diplomat and reach out to Ellenes and Philellenes and unite them in the interest of  promoting full
contact martial art that instills the values of Hellenic warriorship (mind, body, spirit integration) to emulate "the ancient legacy"
              together.
· 2012 - Reprioritizes his own training, that of his 3 growing children (Demetrios, Elias, and Kallista)., and his students
           - Through an act of fate, connects with the Masters of the 5 Pankration clans. He reaffirms his faith in God (O Theos) the Creator
Continues his quest of self knowledge under their watchful eye and tutelage.  He gains incredible insights to pass
on to his children and students.
