Students at the Akrites Academy are encouraged to participate in amateur
contact-oriented tournaments. Children are urged to compete in submission
grappling and, if possible, sport Pankration tournaments that adhere to
the "Sport Pankration Rulebook" guidelines (see the "Downloads"
page). Adults are encouraged to participate in professional MMA competition.
It is MMA that is considered the modern equivalent of the ancient sport
Pankration. It is essential that the student is able to handle himself
under the duress of the competitive ring.
Sport is not viewed as the end all of Greek martial art. However, it
is invaluable to learn the proper application of skill against an unfamiliar
opponent, while under psychological pressure. The safe formats of Pankration
tournaments and professional mixed martial arts bouts help to develop
the physical and mental skills that are necessary in a real life altercation.
The modern practitioner of "mahitiki tehni" shares the same
perspective of sport with his ancient forebears.
